SCAD + THE MILL
Color grading part 2 and composting
I have been working on the color grading for the short film; I compiled two quilts comparing the before and after for all the shots. I also worked on the compositing for the 2 CGI shots as soon as I received all the elements on Sunday at 11pm, so I unfortunately only had a short amount of time to composite.
I began with compositing the boat because that is the first material the team provided for me. For this shot, I decided to match the sun and the color temperature of the plate in order to get that boat integrated more on the plate, I enhance the color of the lighting to get the same feel and color that is in the Macbeth chart, and then I matched the shadow based on the shadow that was provided by the character. I also tried to soften the shadows from inside the boat as much as I could, but we decided to soften them more for next weeks update with Jenson (Lighting/ lookdev). For this shoot after doing the compositing I re color corrected the elements in the scene to make it more cohesive with the general color of the whole short film.
Then when I got the material for the Hero shot, I started compositing all of the elements inside to match the chest. I had one problem and it is that I did not have any separation between the elements, I just had a general beauty render for the chest, coins and cans, so that gives me less control when I am compositing. I tried to match the chest as close as I could to the original lighting plate, but I could not embrace as I wanted the color of the coins and the can.
I also tried to match the shadow by masking it using a color grade, but I did not have the time to match the shadow exactly to the color shadows in the original plate. This will be my priority next week, because the shadow is far of from the real shadows, and I know how important is to get that shadow working to make the CGI look believable. As a team we also fix the rendering problems and now I will have access to AOVs that will help enhance the compositing of the chest for next week.
